I’m currently taking a course called the Story Cartel course through The Write Practice.
Don’t worry, friends and family! A cartel in this case is actually just an agreement between competitors. I haven’t started snorting literature in my spare time.
One of the aspects of this course that really resonates with me is the idea of helping other people, and being able to help fulfill other people’s needs. The thing is that I’m not sure what people consider helpful. So, dumb as it might sound, I need your help to help you. =)
Here are my current ideas on what people might consider helpful:
-Friends and family might just want to have conversation, to hang out, or to talk through a problem.
-Other people in the course might want people to subscribe to their newsletters, review their stories, and/or to have me provide a link to their site in a blog post.
-I can blog about things that help with productivity like time tracking and meditation.
-I can try to write stories that help people feel a little less alone, that give them a sense of wonder, and that give them interesting things to think about.
-And finally, I’m working on interviewing people. Topics can include questions such as: What is it like where you live? What is it like to be in your religion? What is it like to be in your profession? Do you have a unique element to your life that you think would make for a good interview? (Remember, even the mundane can be interesting to the right person…)
If you have an interesting part of your life that you think would make for a good interview, email me at kaseylinanderson@gmail.com and we can set up a phone, Skype, or Facebook call, or (distance permitting) an in-person interview. I’ll type up the interview and post it on the blog, along with any information about yourself you want to include.
The idea of the interviews is to try and build a knowledge base, mainly for writers but also for people who could have an interest in any given topic.
If one or more of my suggestions speaks to you, or if you have any other ideas, please let me know! I can’t promise that I’ll be able to fulfill every request, but I want to work to give back to my communities, so I’ll try. And if you’re one of the Cartelistas, please feel free to share what you’re doing to give back this week.
I do not find your post pandering at all. You have laid out your ideas well, and I think they are nothing but well intended, and will be received as such.
Since you are A sci-fi enthusiast, would you consider taking a look at my story notes for my current WIP (Sci-fi) They are discombobulated, and incomplete, and I am looking to fill in the gaps. Let me know if you’d be interested. I also have the first 14 chapters written, but feel myself stagnating a wee bit.

I just downloaded Campfire It basically is the whole behind the scenes to creating a story with character development, plot development, and all things story related.

Your writing is organized and humorous. I think all the things you mentioned would be helpful. Sometimes just asking what a person needs is the best way to find out. I love the idea of interviewing writers and posting it. I would love some help in doing that because of the tech issue. How do you do it? Thanks Kasey.

You present your ideas clearly and with humor. I found several ideas that I may borrow in my own Blog, as I try to get on board with the cartel class. I felt a bit confused reading this only because I expected to be assigned a story to critique. But that is nothing against your post. It is about my confusion with TWPs new format. I may check out your blog and follow it… and perhaps submit some request for help when I know what I need to learn. Most immediately I will be trying to set up a new dedicated website to promote my writing and work with the cartel. My blog is designed for a much broader range of subjects. Any help with how to get that technically set up would be appreciated. The main thing missing from my current website is the critical mailing list!

I use Bluehost and really? I thought my blog ran rather slowly! Bluehost can be expensive so I would contact customer support and ask them about it!

A further issue is that video games are usually serious in nature with the key focus on studying rather than enjoyment. Although, there’s an entertainment facet to keep children engaged, each and every game is often designed to develop a specific group of skills or program, such as mathmatical or scientific disciplines. Thanks for your write-up.
